IN THE BEGINNING...
It was 2013, and in the middle of a Melbourne taco bar, 3 starry-eyed boys who had just arrived in “the big city” decided then and there, almost a dozen beers and a handful of tacos deep, that they would form a bike gang with a difference. One that allowed them to make friends, have a laugh, and celebrate a mutual love and understanding of bikes, #art, motorsport, music, and the experience of growing up in super euro households.
And so, as it has been written in the history books, the Soup Boys, a gang named after a song loved by all, set off on their mission to save cycling. What it was being saved from was never truly uncovered, but in the years since that fateful night in the taco bar the crew has organically grown and collectively prospered as cyclists, and as people, all the while proving you don’t need Michael Bay budgets to have an incredibly fun & beautiful time on two wheels.
May that journey continue.
In the early days, by way of post-work rides, we grew on the streets of Melbourne’s CBD, but it's the inner-NW suburbs of the city where our heart and soul lies. It is where family homes are situated, where Soup Boys safe houses have hosted post ride pizza and beers, and late night pro cycling screenings. It has provided us with a neighbourhood to congregate, to host our weekly bunch ride in, and a place to fiercely defend. It’s only a matter of time those to the east and south of the river realise that the west is best.
We didn't have to partner up with Ancestry.com to know our origins run deeper than the neighbourhood we call home. We have a strong presence in Adelaide, while through we engage with regional Australia through our dedicated Soup Boys Regional HQ headed up by Benno. To ensure the Soup Boys message extends globally, we have set up historical markers as far as Aarhus, Florence and Osaka among other cities.
The city of churches, Montacute Rd and most importantly; Red Tins™. This beautiful city nestled between beaches better than Melbourne's, and hills better than Melbourne's lends itself to the origin stories of two of the three Soup Boys co-founders. In the beginning, the South Australian influence was imparted upon the inner-NW of Melbourne, before two of the Sons of Soup returned to the Heaps Good™ chosen land to lay the foundations for great things in the festival state. In January we congregate for the Tour Down Under, while during the quieter months of the year (Feb – Dec) we occasionally make the journey across the time zone for a milder experience of winter.
VICTORIAN HIGH COUNTRY
A spiritual home of the SBC, a region that offers itself up to the cycling gods. It would be in the early days that Ben and Adrian forged their path's as teenage cycling prodigies, exploring the valley's and mountain ranges with chains firmly placed on the big dog. Long range days travelling down the Kiewa Valley Hwy, time spent cooling off in the local streams, and experiencing the finest mountain climbs Australia has to offer have helped add a deeper layer to the brand mythology of the SBC. We return to get high in the country in search of much deeper meaning, to push our limits, and to eat and drink our way through the expanding and mouthwatering food & wine scene.
